JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas – Congratulations to this year’s Air Force photo contest winners in the adult and youth categories.

This year’s theme “Freedom,” managed by the Air Force Services Activity, received more than 1,200 photo submissions.

First place winners in each category are Sally Maddocks of Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado (adult accomplished); Robert Smith of Ramstein Air Base, Germany (adult novice); Monique Wilson of Yokota AB, Japan (youth 13-17); Kallen Krieman of Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio (youth 9-12); Lucas Cotten of Eglin AFB, Florida (youth 6-8).

“I couldn’t be more impressed with the creativity and quality of this year’s submissions to our annual Air Force photo contest,” said Col. Donna Turner, AFSVA commander. “Three years ago we transitioned to an electronic contest to allow every Air Force Services customer the opportunity to participate. Looking at the number of submissions – we had more than 1,200 – our customers appreciated the change. I’m already looking forward to the 2019 competition.”

“It was so amazing to see how each photo translated the photographer’s view of freedom, through the lens of a camera,” said Darlene Johnson, AFSVA Community Programs Branch chief. “We have incredible talent at our Air Force installations.”

A panel of photography experts used several factors in determining the winners, such as impact, creativity and technicality of photos.

“Overall, the entries were a breathtaking body of work to enjoy and judge. It was not easy to decide between winners and almost-winners,” said Billy Calzada, a professional photographer for the San Antonio Express-News and panel judge.

The top three winners in each category received Amazon gift cards.
